Inspired by the iconic original, KPM's chief designer Thomas Wenzel created a contemporary adaptation of the Sandman to mark the 65th anniversary. The result is a strictly limited special edition porcelain figurine with a pointed cap and goatee.

Our “ Sandmännchen ” is far more than just a TV character—it is a national cultural treasure that has accompanied generations: As early as 1961, not only did the first human, Yuri Gagarin, fly into space, but so did the “ Sandmännchen .” In the years that followed, the “ Sandmännchen ,” with his imaginative rockets, traveled through space time and again, visited space stations, and drove his lunar rover—spectacular for its time—across the barren surface of the Moon. Inspired by this boundless curiosity, KPM Berlin , in collaboration with rbb media, is launching the exclusive “Platinum Edition,” strictly limited to 66 pieces. This modern interpretation of the iconic Sandmännchen—created by Gerhard Behrendt in 1959 for East German television—was redesigned by KPM’s chief designer, Thomas Wenzel, to mark its 65th anniversary and combines time-honored craftsmanship with nostalgic charm. Each individual Sandmann is handcrafted at our workshop in Tiergarten and hand-painted with glossy platinum in the master painting studio of “ KPM Berlin ,” where each piece is individually numbered by hand. The perfect combination of two renowned Berlin cultural treasures.
